Chapter eleven

In the years since the end of the Nigeria-Biafra War two pieces of mythology have grown up to explain why Aburi failed and are today believed quite sincerely by many Nigerians. The trouble is, the record has had to be changed to justify the myths. The actual record, which is still available for study, shows something different.

Emeka went to Aburi leaving behind him an Eastern Region in turmoil and an extremely volatile emotional state. Hatred was not the main component, though it was undoubtedly present, and perhaps bearing in mind what had happened over the past three months that was not surprising. But the main component was fear; millions of people there were gripped by a basic terror and despair. Emeka as their leader had to bring back something to reassure them. That was the important thing. Anyone visiting the East in those days could have confirmed that.

Emeka himself bore no hatred within him and in any case it constitutes an extremely small part of his make-up. Nor was he afraid, at least, not for himself. If he feared at all, it was for the Eastern people and what might await them if Aburi failed. In consequence he was deeply aware
